Ceci N'est Pas Un Viol

''Ceci N'est Pas Un Viol'' ("This is not a rape") is a work of performance art by American artist Emma Sulkowicz.〔
Lauren Gambino, ("Columbia graduate who carried mattress releases video depicting 'rape'" ), ''The Guardian'', 5 June 2015.
Megan Friedman, ("Emma Sulkowicz on Her New Project: 'Please, Don't Participate in My Rape'" ), ''Elle'', 5 June 2015.〕 Released on 3 June 2015, the work consists of a website hosting an eight-minute video, introductory text and an open comments section.〔 The video shows Sulkowicz having sex with an anonymous actor in a dorm room at Columbia University in New York City. It was directed by artist Ted Lawson in early 2015, while Sulkowicz was in her final year of a visual-arts degree at Columbia.〔Cait Munro, ("Emma Sulkowicz Breaks New Ground With Troubling Video Performance" ), ''Artnet'', 4 June 2015.〕
The film illustrates the shift between consensual and non-consensual sex.〔Priscilla Frank, ("'Mattress Performance' Artist Emma Sulkowicz's Newest Work Is A Video Of Violent Sex" ), ''The Huffington Post'', 5 June 2015.〕〔 Named after "''Ceci n'est pas une pipe''" from René Magritte's ''The Treachery of Images'',〔Charlotte Alter, ("Student Who Carried Mattress in Rape Protest Unveils New Project" ), ''Time'', 5 June 2015.〕 the scene shows Sulkowicz and the actor engaging in what begins as a consensual sexual encounter and ends with what appears to be non-consensual anal sex.〔 (The text notes that the sex was consensual and only appears to be rape.)〔Erica Schwiegershausen, ("Emma Sulkowicz Made a Film Addressing Rape" ), ''New York Magazine'', 5 June 2015.〕
The online response to the video is a central part of the work, described as an example of participatory art.〔 Sulkowicz wanted to know "what the public does with (video ), which begins with the way they deal with it from the moment it's disseminated."〔Cait Munro, ("Emma Sulkowicz Speaks Out About Her New Video Performance" ), ''ArtNet'', 4 June 2015.〕 Shortly after it appeared, the video was taken offline by a denial-of-service attack.〔Lauren Gambino, ("Emma Sulkowicz's This Is Not A Rape site taken down by cyberattack" ), ''The Guardian'', 9 June 2015.〕 By 9 June 2015, there were 2,700 comments on the site, most of them hostile and ridiculing.〔Hannah Rubin, ("This Is Not About Emma Sulkowicz's Rape — It Is About You" ), ''The Forward'', 9 June 2015.〕〔Sarah Seltzer, ("Vile Comments Are the Most Important Part of Emma Sulkowicz's Graphic New Video" ), ''Flavorwire'', 9 June 2015.〕 Sulkowicz said she strongly believed in the video's importance, but that making it had been a "traumatizing" experience.〔

Emma Sulkowicz (born c. 1992) is an American artist and anti-rape activist. The daughter of Sandra Leong and Kerry Sulkowicz (both psychiatrists from Manhattan), Sulkowicz is of Chinese-Japanese-Jewish descent. She attended Dalton School and Columbia University, obtaining a degree in visual arts in 2015.〔For age, ("Carry That Weight" ), Emma Sulkowicz interviewed by Roberta Smith, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, 14 December 2014, c. 48:50 mins.〕〔Vanessa Grigoriadis, ("Meet the College Women Who Are Starting a Revolution Against Campus Sexual Assault" ), ''New York Magazine'', 21 September 2014.〕 Her senior thesis at Columbia and her first notable artwork was ''Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight)'' (2014–2015). This consisted of Sulkowicz carrying a mattress wherever she went on campus during her final year, in protest against campus sexual assault and the university's handling of a complaint she filed against a student she said had anally raped her.〔Roberta Smith, ("In a Mattress, a Lever for Art and Political Protest" ), ''The New York Times'', 21 September 2014.〕 The university cleared the student of responsibility;〔 the district attorney's office declined to pursue criminal charges, citing lack of reasonable suspicion.〔
Max Kutner, ("The Anti-Mattress Protest" ), ''Newsweek'', 28 April 2015.〕
